Tunis is the principal city of Tunisia. Capital of the country without interruption since the reign of the dynasty of Hafsides in 1229, it is also the chief town of the governorship of the same name since its creation in 1956.
Located at the north of the country, at the bottom of the gulf of Tunis from which it is separated by the Lake Tunis, the city extends on the coastal plain and the neighbouring hills.
Populated of 728.453 habitants1 - called Tunisois -, it is included in a very wide agglomeration (up to 30 kilometers to reach the suburbs northern of Marsa) and populated (2 000.242 for the whole of the agglomération2). Patron saint of Tunis east Sidi Mahrez which gave its name to a mosque of the city.
