Tozeur is a city of Tunisian Jerid and the chief town of the governorship of the same name.
It counts 32.400 inhabitants (census of 2004). Located at the North-West of Chott el-Jérid, it is with 450 kilometers in the south-west of Tunis. It is about oasis to the doors of the desert of the Sahara. Tozor is a mystical city strewn marabouts and known before for his well-read men. One of the parts of the old city is built out of bricks (developed today with a tourist aim) made of a mixture of sand and clay.
The houses of the one of the old workings of Tozeur (Ouled El Hadef) are thus equipped with this architecture, its small lanes (dating from XIVe century) forming a true labyrinth. The city is surrounded by a palm plantation of roughly 1000 hectares, sheltering some 400.000 trees, formerly irrigated by the few 200 sources of Short-nap cloth El Aïoun now dry following many drillings which from now on feed Tozeur.
