Sousse is a harbour city of the east of Tunisia, located at 140 kilometers in the south of Tunis, and opened on the gulf of Hammamet (Mediterranean).
It is the “capital” of the Tunisian Sahel (called the “pearl of the Sahel”) and the chief town of the governorship of the same name.
The population of the municipality reaches 173.047 inhabitants and its agglomeration borders the 400.000 inhabitants, which makes of it the 3rd agglomeration of Tunisia (after Tunis and Sfax). Similar names can be found in Libya and in the south of Morocco (Souss). Souss as a Morrocan is synonymous with rief, which wants to say wandering or country whereas Sousse is the name allotted to a city at the time symbol of power and sedentariness.
