Monastir (of Latin monasterium or monastery) is a coastal city of the Tunisian Sahel located on a peninsula at the south-east of the gulf of Hammamet (with 20 kilometers in the east of Sousse and with 162 kilometers in the south of Tunis). In 2004, the population of the municipality is of 71.546 inhabitants against 40.000 for the city itself.
