Douz is a city of the south of known Tunisia as the “door of the Sahara”. During Antiquity, it is about the most important oasis of the area.
Attached administratively to the governorship of Kébili, it constitutes a municipality of 27.060 inhabitants. Up to one recent period, it is an important stopover for the caravans in their voyages between the Sahara and septentrional Tunisia. It is currently a destination of many tourists come to visit the dunes of the Great Eastern Erg.
The city accomodates one of the markets most characteristic of the country where are daily sold artisanal products but also, once by week, of the asses and the dromedaries. One also finds there a museum ethnic which illustrates the life of the people which lived in the desert
